Liebesträume: Dreams of Love

FOREWORD & PROLOGUE

Inspired by Uhland’s poem:

Gestorben war ich
Vor Liebeswonne;
Begraben lag ich
In ihren Armen;
Erwecket ward ich
Von ihren Küßen;
Den Himmel sah ich
In ihren Augen.

Tipsypixel’s interpretation of Gestorber war ich:

I had died once before in love’s bliss.
I laid there buried in her arms to be reawakened with a kiss.
Only then did I realize, the heavenly skies in her eyes.

PROLOGUE: Nights at Liebesträume

Liebesträume was empty except for the few usual customers. It had been like this ever since a young woman killed herself in one of the obscured corners. Only when it was closing time did they find her. As you could have guessed, she was dead. After Liebesträume reopened, most people steered clear away. Despite that, I kept coming back. It was the perfect place for me. The atmosphere and the people temporarily made me forget what was outside the door.

Once I entered, another world was unveiled… a world dimly lit with warm-colored lights.

I was greeted by the usual customers:

a sly smile from a face heavily caked in white powder and red rouge…

a low grunt from hunched shoulders…

a quick glance from black curls towered high...

a simple nod from a genderless, cloaked figure…

I sat down at the bar and looked at my watch. Eleven-Sixteen. It was still too early to go back “home.” I hated that place. Can’t really recall a time when I thought otherwise.

-

“Mr. Renzo! Good to see you again. Can I get you start on Coco’s newest-“

“No, Larisa,” I replied before she had the chance to finish, “Tell the owner I want my usual.”

The girl behind the counter gave a polite smile and turned. I could hear her mutter something underneath her breath as she disappeared through the curtained doorway. She was nothing special… just your typical whore. She slept with anyone willing to dish out money. That’s how the stories went. The owner, on the other hand… completely different story. She’s a good girl with a cute face. Even though she owned a place like this… I can see her working at an animal shelter… or something along those lines. Such a nice girl.

I glanced around again. Everything was the same, the people, the decoration, the furniture… Liebesträume doesn’t suddenly change, that’s how things should be. I’ve grown quite fond of this place. I would drink late into the night and the owner ends up taking me home.

I may come off as a drunk but trust me, some people envy the life I live. I mean, I had all the money I could ever want after that unfortunate incident.

What incident, you ask? And why was it “unfortunate?”

Hmm… Let’s see… I stumbled upon the secret behind transforming worthless metals into precious gold.

Sounds like a big discovery, huh? Yeah, but it was totally by chance. I was actually looking for a cure. I wanted to save her life as well asthe little connection we had left. As you can see, things never end well for me. When it came to maintaining a relationship, I had always been a failure. My social life was a mess. My family life was non-existent. I tried, you know? It just never works out… as if… I was meant to be the loneliness person in the world.

I stopped taking things seriously.

I no longer cared what the media said about me. I dated anyone who came my way. It didn’t matter whether they were beautiful or ugly… wealthy or poor…

I thought that would lessen my worries, to live freely like that… but I was wrong. One day, while taking a stroll in the park, I walked passed a newspaper stand and the morning headlines caught my eye. Although the whole metal to gold business they reported was just a fake, I knew it would be wiser to take safety precautions. I never told anyone about my discovery…thinking I was safe…

For months I had been preparing for this day. Finally, I would be able to erase all trace of ever knowing the secret to infinite wealth.

Five parts to the secret.

Five suitable candidates.

Perhaps it was a bit selfish of me to pass the burden to them even though they owed me their lives.

What’s done is done. There’s no turning back.

-

The owner placed the drink in front of me. I grabbed on to her wrist and pulled her closer. She wasn’t at all surprised at my sudden action.

I leaned in, our faces were literally inches apart, “Do you know that when tonight ends, I will forget about this place and I will probably forget about you too?”

“It’s fine,” she replied.

“I might never come back here again.” I added.

“Good. You always make my place gloomier than it really is.”

I raised my head a little higher to look directly into her grayish-brown eyes. They softened as if to say “I’ll miss you, my friend.”

Lies.

I released my hold.

“You’re a good girl, owner.”

Her laughter reminded me of bells jingling. She was amused.

“Since this is your last night, drinks are on the house.”

“Thanks.” My attention returned to the glass in my hand.

Another glass…

And then another…

Then another...

Until everything went dark.

“Larisa, can you take Mr. Renzo home today?”

“But you usually take-“

“Just this once, sweetheart… I will never ask again.”

Because there won’t be a next time… the owner thought.
